 Downtown Hickory Farmers’ Market Announces Date for Fifth Annual Jam Contest

 The Downtown Hickory Farmers’ Market will host its fifth annual Jam Contest on Saturday, August 1, 2009.  Listed below are the rules for the contest.  Prizes will be awarded. 

Downtown Hickory Farmers’ Market Fifth Annual Jam Contest Rules 

1.         All interested participants must bring a 6oz or larger jar of his or her prized fruit jam to the Market on August 1st by no later than 10a.m.

2.         Each jar must be accompanied by a basic entry form completed at sign-in on August 1^st.

3.         Entered jam/preserves must fit within the definitions listed below.

4.         Three judges will blindly taste each submitted jam for review at 12p.m. on August 1^st.

5.         Cooked jams and preserves only.  Sorry no refrigerator or freezer jams.

6.         Jams may consist of one or more fruits local to Catawba County.  No vegetables or exotic fruits may be used.

7.         Winners and prizes will be announced at 1p.m. on August 1st.

8.         All decisions made by the judges are final and may not be appealed.

 Jam- a thick mixture of fruit, sugar and sometimes pectin that is cooked until the pieces of fruit are very soft and almost formless

 Preserves- Fruit is cooked with sugar and usually pectin.  Preserves differ from jam in that chunks of fruit are medium to large rather than the texture of thick puree.
